ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - After winning the doubles final at the ITA Midwest Regional on Sunday (Sept. 18) afternoon, sophomores
Zsofia Kranczicki (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) and
Zsofia Lanstiak (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) faced off in the singles final on Tuesday (Sept. 20) afternoon at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex.
Kranczicki claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lanstiak. The duo will now head to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships October 13-16 in Mobile, Ala. The USTA/ITA National Small College Championships are comprised of the eight regional champions (and/or at-large selections) from NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges. The tournament is the only national championship event for singles and doubles at the NCAA Division II and NAIA levels.
"I am so proud of the Zsofi's," head coach
Brett Bridel said. "To win the doubles and have the two finalists is amazing. While it's a shame that there is someone who had to lose today, they both had a great regional tournament and beat some very good players along the way.
"It makes it a little easier for all of us because they are both going to the nationals as a doubles team. It is great for our tennis program and for Lewis University."
The Flyers are back in action on Saturday (Sept. 24) as they host Illinois Wesleyan at 10 a.m. and St. Francis (Ill.) at 2 p.m.
