A baseball player for the Flyers from 1987 to 1991, Ernie Young was drafted following his junior year by the Oakland Athletics in the tenth round of the 1990 major league draft.
Young and his teammate, Rick Huisman, led the Flyers to three consecutive NCAA World Series appearances in 1988, 1989, and 1990. The combined bseball record for those years was 137-56. Lewis finished third in the nation in 1989.
While at Lewis, Young held a career batting average of .347 and tied for seventh in career home runs (36). An outfielder, Ernie ranks ninth in career stolen bases with 63 and is in the top 25 category in hits, doubles, triples, and RBIs. Ernie accomplished all of this in just three years of competition.
He was NCAA Division II home run leader in 1990 with 25. He was voted to the GLVC All Conference teams in 1989 and 1990. In 1990, Ernie was voted to the NCAA All American Team.
Young spent 1990-94 with the Oakland Athletics minor league teams. He was elevated to the A's major league team in 1994 and then spent three full years with the A's. In 1997, he joined the Kansas City Royals.
