Box Score
ROMEOVILLE, Ill.--With wind chills dipping into the 30s, a flurry of action in the opening and closing minutes highlighted an exciting come-from-behind victory for the Lewis University women's soccer team.
The Flyers scored two goals in the final 10 minutes and 32 seconds to win their first Great Lakes Valley Conference game of the season in thrilling fashion. Lewis (3-10-1, 1-6-1 GLVC) earned the 3-2 win over Southern Indiana (5-10-0, 3-5-0 GLVC) after freshman Katie Burke tallied the game-winner with 2:16 (87:44) left in the game.
Southern Indiana had Lewis' number the past two seasons as the Screaming Eagles had overcome early deficits to post consecutive 2-1 victories. However, this time would be the Flyers' chance to turn the tables.
Lewis jumped out to a 1-0 lead for the third straight year when junior Loren Pellizzari scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year just 6:26 into the game. Freshman Allison Wilkerson served the ball into the goal area off of a free kick and had her pass received by Burke just wide of the goal. Burke then kicked the ball back towards the goal and Pellizzari tapped her shot past the USI goalkeeper.
USI would answer quickly with a goal at 12:27. Katie Barisano broke free on a run and was fed a pass by Julie Collins that allowed her to tie the game at 1-all.
USI's Alisann Shetler had been Lewis' nemesis the past two seasons as she had scored the game winner in each 2-1 game. She continued that trend as she once again scored the goal that gave USI a 2-1 lead. Shetler scored at 33:48 on a rebound off of her own shot. Kara Marcum was credited with the assist.
The game would remain tied throughout most of the second half with both teams mustering scoring opportunities that they couldn't capitalize on. The best chance from either side was a shot from Wilkerson that clanged off the post at 58:49.
With time winding down and Lewis increasing its pressure and desperation, Burke launched a corner kick into the box that Wilkerson connected on with her shoulder. Wilkerson's shot found the back of the net and the score was knotted at 2-all with 10:32 (79:28) remaining in the game.
The freshman duo teamed up for the game winner eight minutes later as Wilkerson sent a free kick from midfield to the top of the goal box. Burke stayed onside and came free to blast the ball into the net for the 3-2 victory.
Lewis goalkeeper Courtney Hutt tallied nine saves, while USI keeper Casey Hrvatin had two saves.
The win ends a nine-game winless streak for the Flyers. The team will host Missouri-St. Louis at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17.
