ROLLA, Mo. -
Anthony Marsico scored a goal just 39 seconds into the game Tuesday, igniting an impressive Lewis offensive flurry that lifted the Flyers to a decisive 4-0 non-conference men's soccer victory over Missouri-Rolla.
The win lifted Lewis, ranked 17th nationally in NCAA Division II and tied for No. 2 in the Great Lakes Region, to 14-2-2, while Missouri-Rolla fell to 6-9.
The early marker was the first of two for Marsico, a strong candidate for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Freshman of the Year award. He scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season at 49:01 to finish the Flyer scoring. Alejandro Blinder assisted on both Marsico tallies.
In between, Mike Dahm netted goals at 36:15 and 44:40, both assisted by Cathal Brady, to give Lewis a comfortable 3-0 halftime lead. The goals were Dahm's third and fourth of the season, while Brady boosted his assist total to a GLVC-best 11.
The Flyers' 21-13 advantage in shots included an 11-5 margin in shots on goal. Goalkeeper Jordan Gustman went the distance for Lewis.
The Flyers will begin defense of their 2003 conference title Sunday by hosting a GLVC Championship first-round game, with the opponent and starting time to be determined. The semifinals and championship game of the six-team tournament will be hosted by Southern Illinois Edwardsville Nov. 5 and 7.
