INDIANAPOLIS - The Lewis University women's basketball team had NCAA Division I Butler on the ropes for much of the game, but a 14-4 run over the game's last six minutes gave Butler a 71-59 victory over the visiting Flyers.

Lewis (1-2) shot 70 percent from the field in the first half and went into the break tied at 36-all. In the first half, Lewis was 14 of 20 from the field and was led by Darcee Schmidt (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem)'s nine points.

16 first-half turnovers proved to be the Flyers' downside in the period, however. Butler (1-1) was able to take 11 more shots than Lewis in the first half and made up the difference in shooting percentage.

Neither team led by more than two points for the first eight and a half minutes of the second half. There were four lead changes and three ties in the stretch that concluded when Courtney Urquhart converted a layup that put Butler ahead 47-44.

Urquhart's layup was part of a 10-0 Butler run that gave the Bulldogs a 54-44 lead with 9:18 remaining.

Lewis would answer with an 11-3 run of its own that cut the lead to 57-55 with 6:17 left, but that would be as close as the Flyers would get.

Junior Shante Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Lourdes)'s game-high 16 points led the Flyers. She came off the bench to play 24 minutes and shoot 6 of 9 from the field. In addition, she went 2 of 3 from 3-point range and had three assists and three rebounds.

Sophomores Darcee Schmidt and Mary Moskal also reached double-digits in scoring. Schmidt had 13 points with five rebounds and two steals, while Moskal tallied 12 points, three rebounds and a team-high four assists.

All three of Lewis' games this season have been on the road, and that trend will continue next weekend when the team opens play in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Flyers will travel to SIU Edwardsville (5:30 p.m.) Friday, Nov. 26 and then face Quincy (1 p.m.) on Nov. 28. Lewis' first home game will be Dec. 2 against Southern Indiana.
