QUINCY -
Steve Turner tallied 17 points and two other Lewis players scored in double figures, but the Flyers ran into a hot-shooting Quincy team and were defeated 87-64 Sunday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference men's basketball game.
The loss dropped Lewis to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the GLVC. Quincy improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the league, the Hawks' first 2-0 GLVC ledger since joining the conference nine years ago.
Quincy's .548 shooting mark (34-of-62) included a .607 performance (17-of-28) in the second half. The Hawks also were a solid 6-of-13 (.462) from 3-point range, led by Ryan Walker's 3-of-3 effort off the bench in the first half.
After Quincy scored the first seven points, Lewis charged back with a 10-5 spurt to trail 12-10 with 14:06 left in the first half. Turner scored six of the 10 points during the run.
The Flyers would draw no closer, however, although they managed to keep the Quincy lead in single digits for much of the first half. But after Jestin Anderson connected on a 3-pointer with 7:04 to play, the Hawks led 29-18 and maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way, including a 44-31 halftime lead.
Randy Wright scored 12 points and Anthony Scala added 11 points for the Flyers. Scala and John Loeffelholz each had three steals, part of Lewis' total of 13 thefts, while Loeffelholz, Pat Monaghan and Turner topped the Flyer rebounding chart with four apiece.
Quincy's Phil Gettinger was 9-of-11 at the foul line and led all scorers with 23 points, including 16 in the second half. Walker finished with 13 points and Jordan Roth added 12 for the Hawks.
The Flyers host perennial GLVC powers Southern Indiana Thursday (7:30 p.m.) and Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday (3 p.m.). Southern Indiana, last year's NCAA Division II runner-up, was ranked No. 1 in this year's Division II Bulletin preseason poll, while Kentucky Wesleyan was No. 13.
