ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Getting to the free-throw line with uncommon regularity, the Lewis University women's basketball team took 42 foul shots and made 29 in its Great Lakes Valley Conference match up with Southern Indiana.
Lewis (3-3, 2-1 GLVC) took advantage of the incessant referees' whistles--49 fouls were called on the two teams--and earned an 85-70 victory in its first home game of the 2004-05 season.
Sophomore Mary Moskal took up residence at the free-throw line as her 15 free throws tied Lewis' all-time record for free throws made. Meanwhile, her 22 attempts established a new program record. The previous records were held by Carey Jewell (15 of 21), which came against Southern Indiana in 1999-2000.
"Mary did a great job of taking the ball to the basket and being aggressive on the offensive end," said Lewis head coach Lynn Plett. "USI is always an aggressive defensive team. In a tightly called game they're going to get a lot of fouls called on them, and that's what we were able to take advantage of tonight."
Moskal, a 5-9 forward, tied fellow sophomore Darcee Schmidt for game-high scoring honors as the pair scored 25 points each. Moskal finished the game 5 of 9 from the field and pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds to record her first career double double. Schmidt closed the night shooting 7 of 16 from the field and 8 of 9 from the free-throw line. She also pulled down four rebounds and had a career-high six steals.
In addition to Moskal and Schmidt, junior Shante Glenn tallied 20 points to give the Flyers three players that scored at least 20 points. Glenn was 7 of 14 from the field, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range.
The Flyers were able to build an 18-point halftime lead thanks in part to going 19 of 29 from the free throw line. USI (4-2, 1-2 GLVC) earned its share of shots from the line as well, going 10 of 12 in the half.
Lewis never trailed and led by as many as 20 points. The closest USI would draw was within five with 9:56 to play in the first half. From there, the Flyer lead hovered in double digits for most of the game.
The Screaming Eagles made a late run and cut the score to 73-66 following a Jamie Truitt 3-pointer with 4:15 left to play. However, Lewis answered with a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to close out the game. Schmidt tallied seven points in the stretch and scored nine of the Flyers final 10 points.
Sophomore Erin Cox added eight points and six rebounds, while Brittney Diener had a game-high eight assists.
For Southern Indiana, Andrea Engleking led four players in double digits with 17 points. Ashley Green (14 points, 4-4 from 3-point range), Truitt (13 points) and Sabrina Brandon (10 points) round out the team's scoring leaders.
Lewis will next play Saturday, Dec. 4 when it hosts Kentucky Wesleyan (4-2, 2-1 GLVC) at 1 p.m.
