HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -
A slow-down defensive game prevented the Lewis University women's basketball team from moving to 4-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference as Northern Kentucky topped the Flyers 54-47.
Lewis led 23-22 at halftime and by as many as eight points early in the second half, but NKU (2-5, 2-3 GLVC) made up the deficit and neither team led by more than three points until the closing minutes.
With the game tied at 43-all, NKU's Karmen Graham converted a three-point play that put the Norse up for good. NKU would make all four of its free throws and add a late lay up to pull away in the stretch.
Lewis sophomore Mary Moskal had a team-high 15 points and four assists. She went 6 of 10 from the field and pulled down five rebounds.
Moskal connected on a jumper with 1:44 left in the first half that gave the Flyers (4-4, 3-2 GLVC) their first lead of the game. She then extended the lead to three points with a pair of free throws with 1:09 left in the half.
A last-second lay up trimmed Lewis lead to one at the break, but the Flyers opened the second half with seven unanswered points to build their biggest lead of the game. Sophomore Erin Cox began the half with a 3-pointer which was followed by a lay up from Moskal and a lay up from sophomore Darcee Schmidt.
Leading 30-22, Lewis would see its lead shrink away over the next four minutes until NKU tied the game at 30-all with 14:10 to play.
Schmidt contributed nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. Cox added seven points and four rebounds, while Shante Glenn had eight points and four rebounds.
The Flyers next travel to Indianapolis for a 1 p.m. game Saturday, Dec. 11.
