Pair of Freshmen Lead Lewis Past Kentucky Wesleyan

Oct. 17, 2003

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - With a 3-1 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan, the Lewis University women's soccer team avenged consecutive losses to the Panthers in the past two years and gave the Flyers their first Great Lakes Valley Conference win in two seasons.

Lewis (4-11-1, 1-5-1 GLVC), winless with two ties over the past two years in GLVC play, topped Kentucky Wesleyan (2-9-0, 0-8-0 GLVC) and kept alive the team's hopes for a bid in the GLVC tournament.

The top eight teams in the league qualify for the league tournament. The Flyers currently sit in ninth place, one game behind Southern Indiana for the eighth spot.

Lewis freshman Jenna Volpi (Chicago, Ill./Immaculate Heart of Mary) began the scoring at the 41:05 mark with her sixth goal of the season. Volpi's tally marked the most goals scored by a Lewis freshman since Stacy Beaman registered eight goals in 2000.

Freshman Kim Jensen (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) put away the eventual game-winner at 56:44. She took a crossing pass from Volpi and fired it into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Beaman, a senior, closed Lewis' scoring with a low shot to the left corner of the goal from 15 yards away at 81:27.

Kentucky Wesleyan's Stephanie Pfirman ended the shutout bid 29 seconds later. She stole the ball near midfield, then drove up the left side before launching a curling shot over the outstretched arms of Lewis goalkeeper Courtney Hutt (Belvidere, Ill./Boylan).

Hutt was granted a light day's work as she faced just five shots and stopped three of the four shots on goal. On the other end, Panthers' goalkeeper Christina Machuca was peppered with 26 shots, including 16 on goal.

Lewis has two games remaining on its 2003 regular-season schedule. The Flyers host Bellarmine at noon on October 19 and then close the season with conference-leading Northern Kentucky October 25.
