Feb. 19, 2004

Box Score

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - ROMEOVILLE, Ill.-Five players finished in double digits and a pesky defensive effort led the Lewis women's basketball team past Kentucky Wesleyan 74-59.

Lewis (14-10, 11-6 Great Lakes Valley Conference) limited Kentucky Wesleyan (5-19, 2-15 GLVC) to just 34.5 percent (20-of-58) shooting for the evening and forced 19 turnovers in the win.

Offensively, Kim Harris (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) came off the bench to score a team-best 12 points. Harris was 5-of-8 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the 3-point arc on the night. She led a group of five players that tallied at least 10 points. Tracy Buchholz (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge) netted 11 points and Bryanne Callahan (Seneca, Ill./Seneca), Mary Moskal (Cherry Valley, Ill./Rockford Boylan) and Shante Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Lourdes) each had 10 points.

The teams didn't come out of the gate quickly, but Lewis turned a one-point deficit into a 25-8 lead following an 18-0 run over a 3:21 span. Buchholz began the run with a 3-pointer that gave Lewis a 10-8 lead. She followed with a second 3-pointer less than a minute later to push the lead to five points. A flurry of defensive pressure produced three steals in the next minute and resulted in eight more points. The Flyers capped the run with a jumper by Erin Cox (Lena, Ill./Lena-Winslow).

The run turned out to be the difference in the game as Lewis finished with a 43-27 halftime lead and played even in the second half.

The victory keeps the Flyers in a tie for fourth place in the GLVC standings. Lewis one game behind Indianapolis for third place and one and a half games behind Bellarmine for second.

Lewis' next game is Saturday, Feb. 21 when the team hosts Southern Indiana (17-7, 10-7 GLVC). The Flyers will celebrate their three seniors careers prior to the game with their annual Senior Day. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
