Flyers Beat a Nationally Ranked Team for the 4th Time

Jan. 17, 2004

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Sophomore Shante Glenn helped cement her coming out party to the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a career-high 30-point performance that lifted the Lewis University women's basketball team to a 70-65 victory over nationally ranked Indianapolis.

Lewis (10-6, 7-2 GLVC) has won four straight games, and the win over No. 18 Indianapolis (12-5, 6-4 GLVC) marked the fourth time this season the Flyers have beaten a team ranked in the nation's top 25. Lewis is 4-0 against ranked teams this season and has beaten teams ranked No. 10, 11, 18 and 24.

"The focus and intensity we played with was as high as it's been all year," said Plett about the team's overall performance.

Glenn continued to pose matchup problems for opponents as the 5-5 guard utilized her speed to create scoring opportunities for herself and her teammates.

"Shante's quickness and speed makes it so hard to stay in front of her," said Lewis head coach Lynn Plett. "She has been playing really smart since early December and when you combine that with her quickness, that makes her tough for other teams to defend."

Glenn bested her previous career high of 20 points with 30 points on 12-of-19 shooting and a 6-of-6 performance from the free throw line. She also added a team-high seven rebounds and four assists.

The Flyers held a 37-32 halftime lead and maintained that margin throughout the majority of the second half. Lewis' lead was never larger than six points in the second half, but they only surrendered it once.

With 3:23 left in the game, Erin Moran made a layup that put the Greyhounds ahead 63-62. Lewis answered with jumper from Glenn on its ensuing possession and never trailed again.

"They didn't have the lead very long and that made a difference," said Plett. "If they had been able to extend it to three or five points then maybe it would have changed things."

The Flyers' ability to run the floor aggressively and get into its offense was aided by Glenn and freshman Mary Moskal. Moskal rediscovered an aggressiveness on offense that had been dormant for several games. She finished with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting. All of her shots were layups off the dribble where she beat one or two players to the basket.

Also contributing for the Flyers: Darcee Schmidt had 12 points, four rebounds and two steals, while Tracy Buchholz had eight points and extended her streak of consecutive games with a made 3-pointer to 14 games.

The Flyers will travel to Bellarmine Thursday, Jan. 23. Lewis beat the then-No. 11 ranked Knights 71-68 on Dec. 6 in Romeoville. The game will pit No. 21 Bellarmine and the Flyers in a battle for sole possession of second place in the GLVC. The teams are tied for second with 7-2 league marks behind GLVC leader Quincy (8-1).
