INDIANAPOLIS -
The Lewis University women's basketball team fell to Indianapolis 74-62 as the Greyhounds won their 11th straight home game.
The Flyers (13-9, 10-5 Great Lakes Valley Conference) trailed throughout and tied the game once at 2-all. Defense turned out to be a sticking point in the team's third straight loss. Indianapolis (17-6, 11-5 GLVC) became the third consecutive opponent to shoot 50 percent or better from the field against the Flyers. The Greyhounds netted 51.1 percent (23-of-45) of their field goals, including 66.7 percent (14-of-21) in the first half.
Lewis was able to limit Indianapolis to 37.5 percent shooting in the second half, but the effort wasn't enough.
Darcee Schmidt led three Lewis players in double digits with 11 points. Mary Moskal and Tracy Buchholz chipped in with 10 points each.
Schmidt, the team's leading scorer, was hindered with foul trouble and fouled out in just 15 minutes of play. She picked up two fouls in the first six and a half minutes of the first half and was whistled for a third four minutes into the second half. Her fourth and fifth fouls came in rapid succession as No. 4 came with 8:50 to play and her night ended with 8:17 to play.
Bryanne Callahan posted nine points and a team-high five rebounds in the losing effort. Shante Glenn added eight points and Erin Cox came off the bench to contribute five points.
The three-game losing streak is the most consecutive games the team has lost this season. Lewis had a three-game skid earlier in the season as well, but it rebounded to win seven straight following that slide.
The team will look to get back to its winning ways in a crucial conference road matchup with Northern Kentucky this Saturday. Lewis' loss drops the team from second place all alone to a tie for fourth place with Wisconsin-Parkside.
Northern Kentucky is just one game behind Lewis and Wisconsin-Parkside at 9-6. A loss to NKU on Saturday would see the Flyers drift from second to a tie for fifth place in the league in a span of three games.
Game time against the Norse is 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14.
