HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -
The Lewis University women's basketball team was held to its second-lowest point total of the season as the Flyers lost 65-58 at Northern Kentucky.
The Norse (15-7, 10-6 Great Lakes Valley Conference) limited Lewis (13-10, 10-6 GLVC) to 33.3 percent shooting from the field and avenged an early-season loss to the Flyers in Romeoville. NKU also used 21-of-23 shooting from the free throw line to hold off Lewis.
NKU led by as many as 17 points in the first half and took a 34-18 advantage at the break. However, Lewis used an 8-0 run to start the second half and closed within 34-26 when Bryanne Callahan hit a three-pointer.
Callahan's basket with 9:05 remaining cut NKU's lead to 42-36, but Karmen Graham and Jessica Brock each hit three-pointers to extend the Norse's advantage to 48-39.
Brittany Diener's layup with 2:23 left on the clock brought Lewis within six points at 58-52, but Brock sealed the victory for NKU by draining a three-pointer at the 1:38 mark that gave the Norse a 61-52 advantage.
Brock, a senior playing in her final home game, scored a career-high 20 points and grabbed a career-best 18 rebounds. She also connected on four three-point field goals as NKU improved to 15-7 overall, 10-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. She was 5-for-8 from the field and made all six of her free throw attempts.
Callahan led Lewis with 15 points and was 7-of-17 from the field. Mary Moskal and Tracy Buchholz had nine points each.
Lewis outscored NKU 40-31 in the second half, but the first-half deficit was too much to overcome. The Flyers have lost four straight games, their longest losing streak of the season.
The team will host its final home games of the season Feb. 19 and Feb. 21. The Flyers will host Kentucky Wesleyan and Southern Indiana, respectively, with the Southern Indiana game being Lewis' Senior Day.
