Darrell Evans hit a 15-foot jump shot with 3.3 seconds left to propel eighth-seeded Wayne State (Mich.) to a 65-62 upset of top-seeded Lewis Saturday in a quarterfinal game of the NCAA Division II men's Great Lakes Regional Championship.
The loss was the first for Lewis (24-7) on its home floor this season following a 14-0 regular season.
Evans' game-winning shot came just seconds after Anthony Scala of Lewis missed two free throws, part of the Flyers' 12-of-24 performance at the foul line.
The first half featured seven ties and six lead changes. Lewis (24-7) went on a 9-2 run over the final 2:56 of the half and led 35-28 at the break after Randy Wright hit a 35-foot bank shot at the buzzer.
A Scala 3-pointer gave Lewis its largest lead, 53-44, with 8:41 to play. But Wayne State (18-11), which shot .565 from the floor in the second half and finished at .520 for the game, made 9 of its final 13 shots and steadily closed the gap.
Morris Hall scored 13 points to lead the Warriors' scoring effort. Kendon Edwards tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds, Tariq Mills had 10 points and six rebounds, and Evans recorded seven assists.
Lewis' Monta McGhee led all scorers with 14 points but was held scoreless in the second half. Steve Turner scored 13 points and had five steals, while Sidney Holmes added 11 points and eight rebounds.
Lewis committed just nine turnovers and forced 18 Wayne State miscues, but the Flyers shot just .444 from the floor, including .167 (2 of 12) from 3-point range, and were outrebounded 39-27 by the Warriors.
Wayne State will play the winner of the Michigan Tech-Gannon game Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
