INDIANAPOLIS-The Lewis University softball team ran its winning streak to 14 consecutive games with a doubleheader sweep of Great Lakes Valley Conference for Indianapolis.
The Flyers (29-9, 10-2 GLVC) moved into a tie for second place in the league with the 2-0 and 11-1 victories. Lewis and SIU Edwardsville are tied with 10-2 league records and sit one game back of conference-leading Northern Kentucky (38-2, 10-0 GLVC).
Game 1 saw Mary Jaszczak (10-3) record her third complete-game shutout in her last four outings as she limited Indianapolis (9-21, 4-9 GLVC) to one hit, an infield single. She struck out four and didn't allow a runner past second base.
Offensively, freshman Kristy Vanek put the Flyers on the board in the first inning with a two-out single that scored Elaina Ktistou. In the third inning, Robin Martz led off with a single to the shortstop. She was sacrificed to second and then two batters later, Vanek reached on a two-out error that scored Lewis' final run.
Game 2 saw the Flyer offense continue to roll as it handed the Greyhounds a five-inning, run-rule defeat. Martz went 3-for-4 with a two-RBI double, three runs scored and a stolen base, while Vanek was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Amy Roberts added a pair of hits and an RBI. Lewis scored two runs in the first inning, four in the second and five in the fourth.
A.J. Lagerhausen (4-0) worked all five innings giving up just two hits and one unearned run. In addition, she retired the final 10 batters in order.
The Flyers will be back in action Thursday, April 15 when they travel to Wisconsin-Parkside for a pair of non-conference regional games. The schools will play their GLVC doubleheader April 21 in Romeoville.
