ROMEOVILLE, Ill.--The Lewis University softball team extended its Great Lakes Valley Conference winning streak to 14 games with a pair of victories over visiting Southern Indiana.

The Flyers (34-10, 14-2 GLVC) utilized the long ball in game 1 and got a clutch base hit in game 2 to sweep the conference doubleheader from USI (20-21, 8-6 GLVC). Lewis won the opener 6-0 and the nightcap 1-0.

Despite steady winds blowing in at roughly 20-25 miles per hour, sophomore Kalynn Russell smashed her first career home run to give Lewis a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game 1. Junior Amy Roberts led off the inning with an infield single and scored on Russell's home run.

An inning later, freshman Kristy Vanek duplicated Russell's feat by lining a two-run shot, her third home run of the season, over the center field wall. Vanek's homer plated Crystal Bowen, who had singled home Elaina Ktistou a batter earlier.

Leading 5-0, Lewis added an insurance run in the sixth inning. Amy Yusko led off the inning with a double to left center and was replaced by pinch runner Beth Shelus. Shelus advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and was brought home by Stacy Davis (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South)' RBI single.

Mary Jaszczak (13-4) recorded the win with her sixth shutout of the season and second in as many days. She struck out five and limited the Screaming Eagles to just two hits.

Game 2 saw Kristen Porzel (6-1) get the better of USI's Shannon Emmons in a pitcher's duel. Porzel threw a complete-game shutout, her second this season, while holding Southern Indiana to four hits.

Neither team mustered much offense, but Bowen came through with the game-winning hit in the bottom of the sixth inning. Robin Martz extended her hitting streak to 26 games when she singled to lead off the inning. She advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt by Ktistou and scored the winning run on Bowen's base hit.
