ROMEOVILLE, Ill.-- -
For the second time this season, the Lewis University men's volleyball team held an opponent to a negative attack percentage as the Flyers downed Quincy in three games.
Lewis (14-11, 9-3 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) set the tone in the first game and got better as the match wore on. Quincy (7-13, 3-9 MIVA) was held to a -.030 hitting percentage in game 1 and posted -.171 and .000 marks in games 2 and 3, respectively. The Flyers previously held Clarke to a negative hitting night Feb. 10.
The Flyers combined for 12 team blocks in the match, including six in game 2. In addition, Lewis finished with a flurry, posting a .458 hitting percentage and recording six aces in the final game.
Fabiano Barreto paced Lewis with a match-high 12 kills and eight digs. Jeff Soler added nine kills and a .353 hitting percentage. Ryan Stuntz also notched eight digs and had two of them fall in for kills on Quincy's side of the net. The two kills were a career high for the All-America libero.
Quincy led 7-6 in game 1, but a seven-point Flyer run on the strength of Soler's serving put the Hawks behind a 13-7 and effectively closed them out of the game.
Lewis hammered its way to a 15-3 lead in game 2 and coasted to its 30-12 win. Enrique Escalante had a team-high four blocks in the game.
Game 3 saw the Flyers reverse a 2-1 deficit to a 6-2 lead. James Elsea held serve for the five points and added an ace in the run. Elsea ended the match with an ace as well.
Lewis, winner of six of its last seven matches, will host conference-leading Ball State at 7 p.m. on Sunday. The Flyers handed Ball State its only home loss of the season earlier this year, while also giving them their first MIVA loss after a 6-0 start. The Cardinals are 10-2 and are one game ahead of the Flyers in the conference standings.
