ROMEOVILLE - The Lewis University baseball team closed the home portion of its 2004 schedule on a down note Sunday, falling 5-2 and 14-8 to Kentucky Wesleyan in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.

The Flyers dropped to 16-33 overall and 10-23 in the GLVC, while Kentucky Wesleyan improved to 30-19, 18-16.

In the 7-inning opener, Lewis starter Greg Moss (2-7) surrendered five runs in the fourth inning, but the Flyers made a game of it in the seventh.

Mike Smith delivered a pinch-hit, 2-run double to score Mike Loprieno (walk) and Andy Radak (single). Andy Sweet was hit by a pitch with one out to bring the tying run to the plate, but Kentucky Wesleyan reliever Randy Fulton came on to retire the next two batters and preserve the win for starter Adam Gautreau (7-4).

Matt Newquist had two hits and Ryan Johnson pitched 3 1/3 innings of 2-hit scoreless relief for Lewis.

KWC raced to an 11-0 lead in game two before the Flyer offense came to life with four runs in the fifth.

Darryl Jenkins singled with one out and scored on Smith's double. Sweet's single put runners at first and third for Victor Naut, who came through with a 2-run double and advanced to third on an error by the Panther left fielder. A groundout by Newquist plated Naut.

Trailing 14-4, the Flyers made some more noise with two outs in the ninth. Back-to-back doubles by Loprieno and Jenkins brought home the first run. Following Smith's single, Sweet belted his fifth home run of the season to close the scoring.

Jenkins led the Flyers' 12-hit attack with three hits while Smith, Sweet and Naut collected two hits apiece.

Lewis travels to Saint Joseph's for a GLVC doubleheader April 28.
