ROMEOVILLE, Ill.-The hits keep coming as Lewis University sophomore Robin Martz extended the nation's longest hitting streak to 32 straight games, going 5-for-8 in a doubleheader sweep of Saint Xavier.
Martz removed any anxiety about the streak with base hits within her first two at bats in both games of the doubleheader. She went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored in game 1 and then was 1-for-4 in the night cap. Her streak is the fourth-longest in NCAA Division II history. The Division II record is 35 consecutive games.
Martz, who came into the day needing two hits to break Lewis' single-season record for base hits, blew past the old record of 68 set in 2001 by Mandy Driscoll and Jill Karwoski. She now has 72 hits and is batting a team-best .414 (72-for-174).
Lewis (40-10) beat the Cougars 3-0 and 4-2 as the Flyers reached the 40-win plateau for the first time since 2001 and for just the fourth time in program history.
Kristen Porzel (9-1) took command of game 1, registering a four-hit shutout while striking out three. She has allowed just one run in her last four starts.
Martz helped put the Flyers on the board right away in the opener. The 5-6 lefty doubled to lead off the game and was promptly advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Senior Crystal Bowen plated Martz with an RBI ground out.
Lewis added two more runs in the fourth inning. Amy Roberts ripped an RBI double and Sarah Straughn lifted a sacrifice fly to cap the Flyers' scoring.
The Flyers put a run on the board in the first inning of game 2 as well. Elaina Ktistou got everything started when she reached on a one-out walk. She then proceeded to extend her school record for single-season stolen bases when she swiped second base. After moving to third on a ground out, Ktistou scored on a line-drive single by Kristy Vanek.
Bowen picked up her second RBI of the day when she drove Martz home with a sacrifice fly in the third inning. She later scored the eventual game-winning run on the back end of a double steal in the sixth inning.
Kalynn Russell and Debbie Peterson completed Lewis' scoring in the seventh with back-to-back doubles that scored Missy Krueger, who had pinch run for Russell.
Mary Jaszczak (16-4) earned the second-game victory to post her 14th win in her last 15 starts. She scattered five hits, struck out one and gave up one earned run.
With the regular season ended, Lewis will now travel to East Peoria, Ill. for the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament where it will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament. The Flyers are riding an 11-game winning streak heading into the tournament and have won 25 of their last 26 games. Lewis will play No. 7 seed Indianapolis in the tournament's opening round.
