LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
Senior right-hander Matt Tanton tossed a five-hitter to lead the Lewis University baseball team to a 4-1 win over Bellarmine Sunday in game one of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.
In game two, Bellarmine scored twice in the seventh inning and went on to post a 4-3 victory to earn a split.
Tanton (4-1) went the seven-inning distance in winning his fourth consecutive decision. He struck out six, walked only one and did not allow an earned run.
The Flyers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. After loading the bases on singles by Brian Davis and Darryl Jenkins and a walk to Andy Sweet, Lewis scored on groundouts by Chris Carbonaro and Ahren Baranski and a single by Phil Marchinski.
Victor Naut (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick)'s fourth-inning sacrifice fly accounted for the Flyers' final run. Bellarmine scored its only run in the fifth.
Lewis won despite being outhit 5-4. Jenkins had two of the Flyers' four hits.
In the nightcap, Bellarmine (14-17, 10-8 GLVC) grabbed a 1-0 in the first by scoring on a wild pitch. Lewis (10-20, 4-11 GLVC) scored all its runs in the third on Sweet's single, Carbonaro's sacrifice fly and Baranski's double.
The Knights used two bunt singles and a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make it 3-2 before plating the winning runs in the seventh.
Flyer starter Justin Barr (0-2) pitched 6 1/3 innings and yielded six hits, four runs and five walks while fanning three. Davis was 2 for 4 and Carbonaro collected a double.
Lewis travels to Indianapolis Wednesday for a GLVC doubleheader beginning at noon EDT.
