Men's Soccer Registers First GLVC Win

OWENSBORO, Ky. - The Lewis University men's soccer team overcame an early deficit and defeated Kentucky Wesleyan 3-1 Sunday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game.

The host Panthers (3-4, 0-2 GLVC) drew first blood when Tyson Shulzabarger converted a penalty kick at 14:00. Lewis (7-0-1, 1-0-1 GLVC) evened the score at 36:34 on Carmine DiMiele (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice)'s first collegiate goal, with an assist from Alejandro Blinder (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Instituto French).

The second half belonged to the Flyers, who are ranked No. 3 nationally and No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region in the most recent NCAA Division II polls. Blinder tallied his second goal of the season (unassisted) at 58:34, and Cathal Brady (Dublin, Ireland/St. Peters College Dunboyne) knocked in a penalty kick at 62:47 to provide insurance.

Flyer goalkeeper Jordan Gustman (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) made five saves, while KWC netminder Andrew Minton kept the Panthers in the game by making 12 saves. Lewis earned a 15-7 edge in shots on goal and an 8-1 margin in corner kicks.
