ROMEOVILLE, Ill.--The Lewis University women's volleyball team concluded play in the Flyer Festival with a Great Lakes Region victory over Saginaw Valley State.
The Flyers (5-1) overcame a slow start to sweep the Cardinals (1-6) 30-25, 30-19, 30-27. Both teams failed to record a positive hitting percentage in a sloppy first game, but Lewis rebounded with marks of .357 and .370 in the second and third games, respectively.
Freshman setter Andrea Morrone (Palos Park, Ill./Stagg) took control of the setting duties for games 2 and 3 and the Flyers seemed to settle in under her guidance. Sophomore Theresa Nugent (Oak Lawn, Ill./Queen of Peace) was the biggest beneficiary as she tallied seven kills on 10 attempts in game 2. Nugent finished with a match-high 14 kills and had a .333 hitting percentage; she hit .407 (12k-1e-17att) after the first game.
Lewis burst to a 24-10 lead in the opening game, but miscues allowed Saginaw Valley to creep back and close to 26-23 before the Flyers were able to close ranks and finish the game. Lewis hit -.031, while SVSU hit -.091 in the opening frame.
Steadying the ship, the Flyers played a better all-around second game. Morrone tallied 17 of her match-high 26 assists in game 2.
Game 3 saw Lewis build a six-point lead by the game's midpoint and the team held on to complete the sweep.
Senior Rory Harrison (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) had seven kills and a team-best four blocks, while freshman Jessica Lockhart (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) and sophomore Charisse Steckling (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) added six kills each.
Senior libero Maggie Haen (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) recorded a match high 14 digs to lead Lewis' defense.
The Flyers will next play at home Sept. 9 when they host nationally-ranked Northern Michigan. Match time against the 14th-ranked Wildcats is 7 p.m.
