OWENSBORO, Ky. - Despite a career scoring night by Steve Turner, Lewis came up on the short end of a 74-70 Great Lakes Valley Conference decision at Kentucky Wesleyan Thursday night.

Turner registered career highs of 24 points, 11 free throws made and 14 free-throw attempts. Anthony Scala netted four 3-pointers and scored 14 points, while Pat Monaghan sank a career-high four 3-pointers (4 of 6) and tied his career best of 12 points for the Flyers, who fell to 6-11 overall and 1-9 in the GLVC at the midway point of the league schedule.

Lewis trailed 67-58 with 3:38 to play, but the Flyers stormed back and put themselves in position to win. Scala's 3-pointer and DeAndre Williams (Chicago, Ill./St. Francis de Sales)' conventional 3-point play began and ended a 10-2 run that sliced the KWC lead to 69-68 with 1:05 left.

Scala rebounded a miss on the Panthers' next possession to give Lewis a chance to take the lead, but the Flyers did not convert and fouled on the rebound. KWC's Marko Calic missed the back end of a 1-and-1, but Antonio Bright collected the loose ball and made a layup for a 72-68 Wesleyan lead with :09 remaining.

Both teams owned a six-point lead in the first half. Lewis assembled a 13-4 run consisting of four Turner free throws, two Monaghan 3-pointers and a Scala trey for an 18-12 edge at the 9:55 mark. KWC (11-5, 6-4 GLVC) then went on a 12-0 spurt that put the Panthers up 24-18.

Lewis regrouped, however, and outscored Wesleyan 20-10 over the last 4:46 of the half to take a 38-34 lead into the locker room. Monaghan hit a pair of treys to spark the run that also featured seven points by Turner.

The Flyers' largest lead of the second half was six points, 43-37, with 16:15 to play. A 12-2 KWC flurry resulted in a 49-45 advantage for the hosts.

Randy Wright (Thomasboro, Ill./Rantoul)'s 3-pointer breathed life back into the Lewis offense, though, and Turner followed with two free throws and a layup for a 52-49 Flyer lead at 10:36. But the Flyers missed a chance to increase the margin, and Wesleyan embarked on an 18-6 outburst that gave the Panthers their 67-58 cushion and set the stage for the final Lewis charge.

The Flyers won the rebounding battle 29-28 (including 10 offensive rebounds), with Williams grabbing five boards to lead the way. Lewis was 10 of 20 from 3-point range and 16 of 19 (.842) at the foul line.

KWC, which shot .542 from the floor, was led by Haven Mosley, who scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half. Franklyn Ferguson had 17 points and six rebounds, and Bright tallied 15 points and six rebounds.

Lewis travels to Bellarmine Saturday.
