Lewis University's dynamic duo Mary Moskal and Darcee Schmidt led the women's basketball team to a 70-59 Great Lakes Valley Conference road victory over Kentucky Wesleyan.
Schmidt and Moskal, both sophomores, have led the team in scoring in 15 of the 17 games the Flyers (9-8, 6-4 GLVC) have played this season. The game against Kentucky Wesleyan proved no different as Schmidt paced the squad with 18 points and Moskal added 16. In addition, Schmidt pulled down six rebounds, while Moskal had five rebounds, a career-high six steals and was 8 of 10 from the free-throw line.
Lewis rode an up and down game that featured a series of run by both teams. The Flyers closed the game by outscoring the Panthers 22-10 over the last nine minutes of the game.
Trailing 49-48 with 9:06 to play, Schmidt hit a go-ahead 3-pointer that handed the Flyers the lead for good. Her basket sparked a 13-1 Lewis run over three and a half minutes and gave the team a comfortable 61-50 lead with 5:28 left in the game. Schmidt scored seven points during that span, sinking another 3-pointer and a free throw.
The teams played even for the remainder of the game. KWC trimmed Lewis lead to eight with three minutes to play, but sophomore Erin Cox connected on a 3-pointer to push the lead back to double digits.
Collectively, Lewis shot 44.4 percent (28 of 63) for the game, while holding the Panthers to 36.4 percent (16 of 44). The Flyers also committed a season-low 10 turnovers and forced KWC into 23 miscues. 20 Panther turnovers were a result of Lewis steals.
Sophomore Brittney Diener contributed a solid all-around game for Lewis. The 5-7 point guard registered four points, five rebounds, three steals and five assists with zero turnovers.
In addition, senior Chelsea Francik came off the bench and gave the team seven points, six rebounds and three blocks. Shante Glenn added six points, five rebounds and two steals, while Tenesha McDaniel tallied six points and four assists.
Lewis' win moves it into sole possession of fifth place in the GLVC. The Flyers are just one game behind Northern Kentucky and Bellarmine who are tied for third place with 7-3 league records.
The Flyers next game will give them a chance to make up ground in the conference race as they travel to Bellarmine on Saturday, Jan. 22. Tip off is 1 p.m.
