LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
Sophomores Erin Cox and Mary Moskal each topped 20 points as the Lewis University women's basketball team overcame a 16-point halftime deficit to steal a double overtime victory from host Bellarmine.
Lewis (10-8, 7-4 Great Lakes Valley Conference) defeated the Knights 86-78 in the first overtime game for the Flyers in four years and the first double overtime game since Dec. 10, 1993.
The Flyers trailed 42-26 at the half, but shot 55.2 percent from the field in the second half to make up the margin. Each team scored six points in the first overtime, and Bellarmine (13-5, 7-4 GLVC) needed a shot at the buzzer from Ashley Elmore to send the game to the second overtime. In the second OT, Lewis outscored Bellarmine 16-8 with 10 of its points coming at the free-throw line.
Cox paced Lewis with a career-high 22 points while pulling down 10 rebounds. Moskal added 21 points, 11 rebounds and a team-high six assists and four steals. The performance was the second double double for Cox and fourth double double for Moskal this season.
With 11 seconds left in regulation and Bellarmine leading 64-62, Moskal blocked Angela Smith's shot, Cox grabbed the rebound, and Lewis raced down the floor to score the game-tying basket on a layup by Tameka Harris with five seconds remaining. Bellarmine missed a buzzer-beater that would have won the game, but instead the teams went into overtime tied at 64-all.
Harris cracked the starting lineup for the first time three games ago and has steadily improved in each outing. She tallied three points in her starting debut, six the next time out and recorded a career-high 15 points in the win over Bellarmine. She finished 5 of 8 from the field and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line. In addition, she had three assists and a career-high four steals.
In last year's trip to Bellarmine, Lewis utilized a 21-0 run to forge its way to an 89-72 victory. The Flyers once again benefited from a protracted offensive and defensive burst to beat the Knights.
With 9:15 to play, Lewis trailed 57-44. However, over the next three minutes and 45 seconds the Flyers went on a 17-0 run that converted the deficit into a 61-57 lead. Lewis posted four steals and a block during the span and four players had at least three points during the run.
The win was Lewis' third straight over Bellarmine and its second in a row over the Knights in Louisville; both are firsts in Flyer history.
The victory moves Lewis into a fourth-place tie in the GLVC with Bellarmine. The team is one-half game behind Wisconsin-Parkside for third place.
The Flyers' next game will be a home tilt against Indianapolis (12-5, 5-5 GLVC). Game time is 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27.
