Sophomore Darcee Schmidt turned in a performance that showcased why she earned the 2004 Great Lakes Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year award as she helped guide the Lewis University women's basketball team to an 80-66 victory over Saint Joseph's.
Schmidt led four Flyer players in double digits as she pumped in 22 points on 8 of 10 shooting. She also was 5 of 5 from the free-throw line, pulled down seven rebounds, had two blocks and a steal.
Lewis (11-9, 8-5 GLVC) built a 33-29 halftime lead, before pulling away in the second half. The Flyers shot 58.3 percent (14 of 24) in the second half and outscored Saint Joseph's (3-17, 2-11 GLVC) 47-27.
Junior Shante Glenn turned in her second straight solid all-around performance with 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. She also hit a key 3-pointer with four minutes to go in the game that stymied a Pumas comeback. SJC had whittled an 18-point Flyer lead to eight points before Glenn's three pushed Lewis' lead back into double digits for good.
Mary Moskal added 17 points and was 11 of 13 from the free-throw line. Moskal also had five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Erin Cox gave the team some scoring punch in the first half, netting 10 first-half points. She finished the game with 12 points, but was limited to just 13 minutes due to foul trouble.
Senior Becca Grappin came off the bench and provided a spark as well. The 5-9 guard scored seven points--all in the second half--in nine minutes. Fellow senior Tenesha McDaniel pulled down a career-high nine rebounds and passed out four assists.
Lewis' win keeps the team in fifth place in the GLVC standings. The Flyers are one game out a three-way tie for second with Northern Kentucky, Bellarmine, and Wisconsin-Parkside who all sport 9-4 GLVC records.
The Flyers have only one game next week as they host SIU Edwardsville at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2.
