On the road against regional non-conference foe Grand Valley State, the Lewis University women's basketball team lost 85-64.
Grand Valley State (8-4) scored the first five points of the game and never trailed as Lewis (6-6) dipped back to .500. The Flyers were limited to 34.5 percent (20-of-58) shooting, while Grand Valley shot 50.8 percent (30-of-59).
Lewis sophomore Mary Moskal paced the team with 21 points. She finished 6-of-11 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. She also pulled down seven rebounds and had three steals.
Fellow sophomore Darcee Schmidt added nine points and had a team-high eight rebounds. In addition, sophomore Erin Cox and junior Shante Glenn tallied seven points each. Sophomore Megan Thompson came off the bench and scored eight points, all from the free-throw line.
After closing the score to 16-12 with 12:04 left in the first half, Lewis was outscored 18-5 for the remainder of the stanza and trailed 34-17 at halftime.
The Flyers trimmed the Lakers' lead to 13 points early in the second half, but failed to score for the next four minutes. During the drought, Grand Valley went on a 13-0 run and built a 49-23 lead. The Lakers would eventually lead by as many as 32 points.
Playing for pride, Lewis was able to cut the score to 76-58 with just over two minutes to play before the game settled on its final margin.
Niki Reams' game-high 22 points and nine rebounds led Grand Valley.
The Flyers return to action Thursday, Jan. 6 when they host Great Lakes Valley Conference-leading Wisconsin-Parkside. UWP is 11-5 overall and 5-1 in the GLVC. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
