ROMEOVILLE -
Anthony Scala (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick)'s incredible 3-point shooting display in the second half nearly brought Lewis all the way back from a 25-point deficit, but Wisconsin-Parkside converted at the foul line when it counted and held off Lewis 79-74 Thursday night at Neil Carey Arena.
Lewis fell to 5-8 overall and 1-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Wisconsin-Parkside improved to 6-8 and 3-4.
Scala tied his career high of 32 points, established earlier this season in a 75-68 win at Northern Kentucky, and netted a career-best nine 3-pointers (9 of 20), one more than the eight he sank against NKU. He tallied 29 points and eight treys in the second half to spark the Flyers to their spirited comeback.
Parkside led 40-20 at the break and boosted its lead to 25 points before the Flyers began their charge. A 13-1 spurt that included two Scala 3-pointers cut the Parkside lead to 56-49 at the 8:27 mark.
Although the Rangers increased the margin to 10 points on two occasions, the Flyers chipped away and actually made it a one-possession game with less than a minute to play. Scala's final 3-pointer of the contest with 20 seconds left made it 75-72 Parkside.
Tyrone Deacon, who led the Rangers with 31 points, made two free throws with 15 seconds remaining for a 77-72 Parkside edge. Brian Hyser (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere)'s two freebies with seven seconds left gave the Flyers hope again, but two more Deacon foul shots cemented the win for the visitors.
Scala added four assists to his 32 points. DeAndre Williams posted 10 points and three steals for the Flyers.
Deacon, who was 15 of 17 at the foul line and 4 of 6 from 3-point distance, added six rebounds and six assists to his 31 points. Gareth Malkowski registered 14 points and seven rebounds, Kevin Boutelle scored 12 points and Brad Ferstenou collected 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The 54 second-half points are the most scored by Lewis in any half this season. The Flyers shot 51.3 percent from the field and committed just four turnovers while forcing 15 Parkside miscues in the second 20 minutes.
Lewis returns to action Thursday, Jan. 13, at home against Quincy. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
