ROMEOVILLE - Pat Monaghan registered career highs of 25 points and 12 rebounds for his first Lewis double-double, and John Loeffelholz scored a career-high 16 points Friday to lead the Flyers to an 83-73 victory over Lake Superior State in the GLVC-GLIAC Challenge.

Monaghan also had career highs of 13 free throws and 19 free-throw attempts as the Flyers (2-0) outscored the Lakers (0-1) 22-4 at the foul line. Lake Superior State did not go to the stripe in the second half and made just eight trips for the game, negating its 50 percent to 42 percent advantage from the field.

Loeffelholz grabbed eight rebounds and Stephan Bolt collected 13 points, 10 boards and three steals for the Flyers, who dominated Lake Superior 51-31 on the glass. Lewis pulled down 23 offensive rebounds, including seven by Bolt and four each by Monaghan and Loeffelholz, to just seven for the Lakers. Brandon Dagans and Dustin Warfield totaled six rebounds apiece.

Tim VanOudheusden scored 14 points to lead four LSSU players in double figures. Ryan Kuhl scored 12 points, and Shawn Berry and Brock Bower netted 11 apiece. Dave Zeitlin had 10 assists, while VanOudheusden and Berry tied for team rebounding honors with six each.

The largest lead of the first half was five points, established three times by Lewis. The 10th and final tie of the opening frame was the 37-all deadlock the teams carried into intermission.

There were five lead changes and four ties in the early going of the second half before an 8-0 Lake Superior run gave the visitors a 54-48 lead with 12:17 left.

The Flyers turned up the defensive heat over the next few minutes, and when Dagans scored on a driving layup to cap an 11-4 run, Lewis had a 59-58 edge at the 8:42 mark.

The Lakers regained the lead briefly twice more. But Bolt's conventional 3-point play, sandwiched around two technical-foul free throws by Monaghan, put the Flyers ahead to stay, 66-63, at 6:55.

With Lewis leading 74-71 with 3:21 left, Loeffelholz scored on an offensive rebound, was fouled and converted the 3-point play to spark a 9-2 game-ending run. Lake Superior's only points in that stretch came on a meaningless layup with 8 seconds left.

The Flyers host Michigan Tech in the GLVC-GLIAC Challenge finale Saturday at 7:30.
