Loyola Beats Lewis in Battle for MIVA Top Spot

CHICAGO - In a battle of conference unbeatens, the Lewis University men's volleyball team lost on the road to Loyola Chicago 31-33, 27-30, 19-30.

The Flyer offense sputtered in a match that pitted two of the three Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association schools jostling for early position in the race for the league's regular-season title. Lewis (5-6, 4-1 MIVA) hit just .160 for the match and was limited to .091 in game 2 and .071 in game 3.

Loyola (10-1, 4-0 MIVA), ranked 13th in the country, hit .349 for the match and had 25 digs and 12.5 blocks. Lewis posted 12 team blocks, but only had 12 digs.

Senior Greg Pochopien paced the Flyers with a team-high 13 kills. The 6-5 middle hitter added four blocks and hit .440.

Jeff Soler chipped in with 10 kills, but was stymied to a .036 hitting percentage.

Defensively, Enrique Escalante led Lewis with six blocks. Libero J.J. Castellano had five digs, while setter Brandon Sisk passed out 38 assists.

Chris Kozlarek paced Loyola with 14 kills. Scott Greene tallied a double double with 12 kills and 12 digs.

Lewis returns to conference action this weekend when it hosts Quincy at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18 and Mercyhurst at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19.
