Softball Opens Season with Split in Dome Tournament

SAINT CLOUD, Minn. - The 20th-ranked Lewis University softball team opened the 2005 season by splitting its first two games at the St. Cloud (Minn.) Dome Tournament.

The Flyers (1-1) opened the season with a 1-0 victory in eight innings over Concordia-St. Paul. The team then turned around and played Washburn immediately following its win over CSP; Lewis lost to Washburn 7-0.

Against CSP, senior Kristen Porzel and freshman Ashley LeGrand teamed for the shutout. Porzel went six innings before giving way to LeGrand who earned her first collegiate victory.

Lewis was the home team against CSP and scored in the bottom of the eighth under international tiebreaker rules. Sophomore Christina Willis advanced to third on a one-out base hit from junior Amy Yusko. On the first pitch to Kristy Vanek, Willis scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch.

Freshman Shannon Roney took the loss against Washburn. Washburn scored three unearned runs in the third inning and added three more runs in the fourth to help clinch the game.

Junior Amy Yusko paced the Lewis offense, picking up a pair of hits in each game. She finished the day 4-for-7.
