RENNSELAER, Ind.--Shante Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Lourdes) scored 27 points and helped lead a pressure defensive effort that guided the Lewis University women's basketball team to an 87-74 road victory over Saint Joseph's.
Glenn posted three steals and was integral in Lewis forcing 30 Puma turnovers. Offensively, she was 11 of 19 from the field, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range, to pace the Flyer attack.
"There wasn't a whole lot of enthusiasm from either team for much of the game," said Lewis head coach Lynn Plett. "We have to create steals and get transition baskets to generate energy on our team and we were able to do that, especially in the second half."
Junior Tameka Harris also played a crucial role in Lewis' perimeter defensive effort. She had a game-high four steals and recorded 10 points.
Lewis (17-9, 14-5 Great Lakes Valley Conferecne) built a 45-38 halftime lead on the strength of 53.1 percent shooting. Saint Joseph's (4-22, 3-16 GLVC) remained close by connecting on 8 of 14 shots from beyond the 3-point arc.
The Pumas opened the second half with a 9-1 run that gave them a 47-46 lead. SJC eventually led by five points with 9:17 to play before Harris made her first appearance in the second half.
Upon Harris' re-entry in the game, Lewis proceeded to go on a 15-2 run that gave the Flyers a 75-62 lead with just over four minutes to play. Harris had two steals during the outburst and Lewis forced seven turnovers.
"[Courtney] Rosenbaum was eating us alive inside, so we decided to go small and pressure them," said Plett. "That kept them from sitting in their zone in the half court and really changed the tempo of the game in our favor."
SJC's Rosenbaum led all scorers with 30 points, including 22 in the second half.
Also providing scoring punch for Lewis were sophomores Mary Moskal and Darcee Schmidt. Moskal registered 20 points, five rebounds and three assists and was 10 of 12 from the free-throw line. Schmidt tallied 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The victory surpasses Lewis' overall and conference win totals from all of last season. In addition, it places the team in a tie for second place in the GLVC with Wisconsin-Parkside.
UWP and Lewis face each other in the season finale Saturday, February 26. The teams are one game behind conference leading Quincy (15-4 GLVC). A Lewis win coupled with a Quincy loss to Indianapolis on Saturday would make the Flyers co-champions of the GLVC.
