RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Saturday, March 5, 2005) - California Baptist (13-4) swept Lewis (8-9) for the second time in as many meetings in 2005, after earning a three-game win at Lewis Feb. 5. The Flyers lost by a combined total of just seven points, falling 29-31, 27-30, 28-30 victory.

Sophomore outside hitter Jared Dayton had a team-high 10 kills for Lewis, which hit only .228, compared with the Lancers' .348. Junior setter Brandon Sisk and senior setter Tom Mendoza each had 10 assists for the Flyers.

Eighteen kills from junior outside hitter Seidu Ajanako, 12 from senior opposite Shaun Dyk, and 11 more from sophomore outside hitter Shamsu Awudu gave NAIA No. 1 California Baptist the sweep. Senior setter Trevor Johnson added 37 assists for CBU.

The Lancers had 10 service errors while the Flyers had seven.

The score was tied nine different times in game one before Lewis took the lead at 14-13. The Flyers then stretched their lead to 18-15, before CBU came back to tie the score at 19-19. With the score tied at 20 apiece, the Lancers rallied for five straight points, which included two of Dyk's match-high three aces. Lewis fought back and tied the score at 26-26 on a kill by senior outside hitter Jeff Soler, and the score was tied two more times before an ace by freshman middle blocker Bryan Anders gave CBU a 31-29 win.

The Lancers's biggest lead came in game two, as they built up an 18-9 lead. However, the Flyers made things interesting toward the end of the game, when they rallied back to within a point, at 26-25 with the help of two aces from senior middle blocker Greg Pochopien. A kill from Ajanako righted the CBU ship, and he finished the game with another kill to make the final score 30-27.

After the Lancers shook a 0-1 deficit in game three, they were either ahead or tied for the remainder of the contest. CBU pulled ahead to an 18-13 lead with the help of a Johnson kill, and a block by Tim Layton and freshman middle blocker Scott Nickerson. The Lancers held off three consecutive scores by Lewis, two coming on kills by Soler, to take the third game, and the match, by a score of 30-28.
