ROMEOVILLE, Ill.--The Lewis University softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of conference foe Saint Joseph's Saturday afternoon, running the Flyers' winning streak to six straight games.
Lewis (22-13, 8-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference), who has won 13 of its last 15 games, beat the Pumas (18-16, 3-9 GLVC) 2-1 in eight innings and 9-3.
Game 1 saw a pitcher's duel between Lewis' Kasey DeLair and SJC's Jessie Privett. The Flyers struck first in the battle with Shannon Roney launching a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Saint Joseph's answered in the sixth inning to tie the game. Privett led off with a slicing fly ball to right that bounded in and out of the glove of Lewis right fielder Carla Musillo. After reaching on the error, Privett was lifted for pinch runner Stephanie Zimny. Zimny quickly advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. With one out, Olivia Klosterman dropped a squeeze bunt that scored Zimny and tied the game.
The game extended into the eighth inning when Lewis' Christina Willis led off with a slap single through the left side. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Willis raced home on an RBI double by Beth Shelus. Shelus' game-winning double was her second two-bagger of the game.
Shannon Roney (7-5) picked up the win, pitching one scoreless inning of relief. DeLair went seven innings, scattering five hits and striking out three.
Game 2 saw Saint Joseph's send eight batters to the plate in the first inning, but only come away with two runs. The Flyers answered with three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back.
Musillo put Lewis ahead for good with an RBI ground out in the bottom of the first. Her RBI was one of four she would drive home as she went 2 for 3 in the second game.
Lewis starter Ashley LeGrand, who was making her first start in almost a month, was able to shake the early jitters and settle in. She retired 15 straight batters from the end of the first inning through the top of the sixth. SJC's Merissa Kapelinski ended the string with a spinning infield single off the end of the bat.
LeGrand (7-1) went the distance allowing three runs and five hits while striking out three.
Willis, Martz and Amy Yusko all had two hits apiece in the nightcap. Yusko scored three runs and Martz and Mallory Paine each scored two runs.
The Flyers' next game comes Sunday, April 17 at noon when they host GLVC foe Indianapolis.
