EVANSVILLE, Ind. -
Lewis University right-hander David Scheibe collected his second victory in five days as the Flyers beat Southern Indiana 5-2 to salvage a split of Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.
Southern Indiana won game one 4-2 despite a solid pitching performance by Lewis' Joe Walsh.
Jon Guzzo had three hits and Billy Duffy had two hits including a double to support Scheibe (2-2), who surrendered 12 hits but walked only one. He struck out three and got a boost from an errorless performance by the Lewis defense.
The Flyers (7-31, 5-21) drew first blood in the second inning when Andy Radak was hit by a pitch leading off, went to second on a ground ball and scored on Dave Tolchin (Lockport, Ill./Romeoville)'s single. Lewis made it 2-0 in the third on a single by Duffy, a bunt single by Guzzo that put runners at second and third following a throwing error, and Kevin Tyrrell (Naperville, Ill./Montini)'s sacrifice fly.
After USI (20-20, 12-12) narrowed the gap with a run in the bottom of the third, the Flyers fired back with three in the fourth. Mike Smith drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on Tolchin's sacrifice and Gregg Degen (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park)'s single. John Benisek plated Smith with a single that also moved Degen to third, and Degen scored on Duffy's suicide squeeze. Guzzo's single put Benisek at third, and Benisek stole home to complete the scoring.
Southern Indiana tallied a run in the fourth, but Scheibe got out of a bases-loaded jam in that inning and stranded two more Screaming Eagles in the seventh to preserve the victory.
In the 7-inning opener, the Flyers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Guzzo reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher and scored on Tyrrell's sacrifice fly.
After USI tied it in the second, Lewis regained the lead in the fourth when Tyrrell led off with a single, moved to second on Victor Naut (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick)'s sacrifice and scored on Radak's two-out single. But the Flyers left the bases loaded in the fifth without scoring, and USI capitalized in its half of the inning by posting a 3-spot.
Walsh (1-6) allowed eight hits and three walks while fanning four.
The Flyers host GLVC rival Saint Joseph's on Wednesday in a doubleheader that begins at 4 p.m.
