ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Junior Robin Martz had five hits, three runs and reached base eight times in a doubleheader against Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Indianapolis.

Unfortunately, Martz' performance was overshadowed by Flyer losses in both games. Indianapolis came from behind in both of its victories to sweep Lewis 2-1 and 4-3.

The Flyers (22-15, 8-4 GLVC) led 1-0 in game and 3-0 in game, but couldn't capitalize on chances to extend their leads. Lewis stranded 15 runners in the doubleheader including situations where the Flyers had bases loaded and none out and runners on second and third with none out.

"We had numerous opportunities to take the lead or blow the games open," said Lewis head coach George DiMatteo. "You have to bury a team when you have the chance. I'm disheartened by the losses. These were critical conference and region games, but you have to give Indy credit, they came through when they needed it."

Lewis cracked the scoreboard first in the opener. Martz led off with a single and promptly stole second base. She then scored three batters later on a two-out error by Indianapolis' third baseman.

Indianapolis (16-11, 7-5 GLVC) tied the game in the third on a two-out RBI single from Lindsey Mischevich. The Greyhounds then took the lead in the fourth on a Danielle Melone RBI single through the right side.

The Flyers finished game 1 with six hits, including a 3 for 3 day with a walk from Martz.

Kristen Porzel (3-6) took the opening-game loss. She worked five innings allowing two runs and seven hits while walking three. UIndy's Beth Wendlinger earned the complete-game victory scattering six hits, striking out five and surrendering an unearned run.

Wendlinger took the circle again in game 2, but this time the Flyers found more success against her.

Martz led off the game with a solo home run to right field, her second home run of the season, to give Lewis a quick 1-0 lead.

In the third, Shannon Roney and Christina Willis each reached on an infield single. Martz then walked to load the bases for Beth Shelus. Shelus lined an RBI single into center to score Roney. However, the Flyers' 3-4-5 hitters were then retired in order to end the threat.

Lewis added another insurance run in the fifth inning. Martz once again led off with a single and stole second base. She went to third on a sacrifice bunt from Shelus and scored on an RBI single from Yusko.

Staked with a 3-0 lead, Roney had cruised through the first five innings in the circle before she ran into trouble in the sixth.

Ashley Vachon led off the top of the sixth with a single and scored two batters later on a Jessica Conant RBI single to center field. Following a Shelus error, Brandi Grubb delivered the blow of the game with a three-run home run to center field that gave Indianapolis a 4-3 lead.

Lewis had a chance in the seventh to win the game, however. Martz and Shelus reached on consecutive errors and were on second and third with no outs when the Flyers 3-4-5 hitters once again went down in order.

Roney (7-6) took the loss going 5 1/3 innings. She gave up four runs (three earned), four hits and struck out five.

Megan Hall earned the win in relief for Indianapolis. She pitched three innings and allowed one run on three hits. Wendlinger re-entered the game to pitch the seventh to claim the save.

Lewis will next play a GLVC doubleheader against Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday, April 21 at 3 p.m.
