ST. LOUIS--The Lewis University softball team opened conference play with a thrilling doubleheader sweep of Missouri-St. Louis that saw a no-hitter in game 1 and a seventh-inning comeback in the nightcap.

Freshman Kasey DeLair (2-1) hurled the first no-hitter of her collegiate career in game 1. She pitched Lewis to a 9-0 five-inning victory by striking out four and walking six. Twice walks led to runners on second and third, but the Flyer defense turned a double play in each instance.

Lewis (14-11, 2-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference) scored one run in the first, three in the third and five in the fourth.

Robin Martz began the game with a leadoff single and promptly stole second. She advanced to third following a sacrifice bunt and scored the game's first run on an RBI ground out from Kristy Vanek.

Carla Musillo began the third-inning rally with a lead off single. She scored two batters later on an RBI single from Martz, while Martz scored two batters later after a Vanek triple. Amy Yusko capped the rally with an RBI single that plated Vanek.

In the fourth inning, Mallory Paine tripled to lead off the inning. Shannon Roney then drove her in with a single. Later, with two outs, Martz singled home Roney. Beth Shelus followed with a single to put runners on first and third. Martz then scored her third run of the game when she was safe on the back end of a double steal. Vanek and Yusko added back-to-back RBI singles to give Lewis four straight hits and a 9-0 lead.

Game 2 saw Lewis trail 1-0 heading into the top of the seventh inning. However, the Flyers overcame the deficit by erupting for six runs and holding on for a 6-2 victory.

UMSL (9-13, 0-2 GLVC) pitcher Jessica Coffey was cruising through her first six innings, giving up just one hit and walking two. However, she struggled to find the plate in the seventh.

Freshman Kasey DeLair threw her first collegiate no-hitter in game 1.

With one out, she walked two consecutive Flyers to put runners on first and second. A failed sacrifice bunt left runners on first and second with two outs. Coffey then misfired on the next three hitters and walked each one. The result loaded the bases, brought home the tying run and plated the go-ahead run.

Leading 2-1 with the bases loaded and two outs, the Flyers broke open the game with a two-run single from Yusko. Paine singled and Musillo singled making it three straight Flyer hits and giving the team a 6-1 lead.

Roney (4-4) registered the win in the circle. She went the distance scattering eight hits and allowing two earned runs while striking out two.

For the day, Martz was 5 for 6 with four runs scored and two RBI; Yusko was 4 for 6 with four RBI; and Vanek was 2 for 6 with four RBI, a triple and three runs scored.

The Flyers return to action Sunday afternoon when it faces Quincy in a road doubleheader. Game time is set for noon.
