QUINCY, Ill.--The Lewis University softball team masqueraded as a football team for a day as the Flyers tallied 35 runs in a conference doubleheader against Quincy.
Lewis (16-11, 4-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference) run-ruled the Hawks (12-16, 1-3 GLVC) in both games, winning 14-2 in game 1 and 21-2 in the nightcap.
A host of hitters had career days to propel the Flyers to the easy sweep. In game 1, Robin Martz paced the team with a 3 for 3 day that included two runs, two walks, two RBI and two stolen bases. Her first stolen base tied Lewis' career record and her second was the program-record 50th of her career.
Also contributing in the opener were: Beth Shelus (three RBI), Amy Yusko (three RBI, two runs), Kalynn Russell (2-3, double, RBI, run scored) and Mallory Paine (2-4, double, RBI).
Freshman Kasey DeLair (3-1) took the circle and followed her first career no-hitter with a four-inning, six-hit performance. She allowed two unearned runs and struck out three. In addition, she helped her own cause at the plate with a double, RBI and a run scored.
Game 2 was highlighted by a 14-run third inning that saw the Flyers send 18 hitters to the plate.
Kristen Porzel (3-5) earned the victory going the distance. She struck out three, scattered seven hits and allowed two runs, one earned.
Offensively, Lewis rapped out 19 hits and registered 18 RBI. Paine paced the team with a 4-5 performance, a home run, a double, four runs scored and three RBI.
Carla Musillo also went deep for Lewis, her third of the season. She finished the game 3-4 with three runs and a team-high four RBI.
Other Flyer offensive stars were: Shelus (3-4, RBI, three runs, double), Yusko (2-2, double, three RBI, two runs) and Shannon Roney (three RBI).
Paine had the best combined performance of the day as she finished 6-9 with two doubles, a home run, four runs and four RBI.
