OWENSBORO, Ky. - Lewis got good pitching in Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Kentucky Wesleyan, but defensive lapses hurt the Flyers in a 3-2, 8-1 twinbill loss to the Panthers.

Joe Walsh (1-8) struck out six and allowed just three hits and two walks in the 7-inning opener. All three Kentucky Wesleyan runs were unearned and came in the fourth inning.

Lewis took a 1-0 lead in the second. Victor Naut singled, advanced to third on Andy Radak (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville)'s sacrifice and Dave Tolchin (Lockport, Ill./Romeoville)'s ground ball and scored on Jim Gabriel (Orland Park, Ill./Providence)'s single.

In the seventh, the Flyers scored a run and put the tying and go-ahead runs at second and third with one out. Radak led off with a single and reached third on a wild pitch and Tolchin's ground ball. Gabriel drove home Radak with a ground ball and reached on a throwing error. After Jon Guzzo walked, he and pinch runner Sam Sacco moved up on a wild pitch but were stranded to end the game.

Brandon Niewinski was 2-for-3 in the opener.

In the nightcap, Kentucky Wesleyan (24-25, 20-16) scored two runs in the first and five in the second off Flyer starter David Scheibe (2-3), but only one run was earned. Tim Harmatys tossed 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, yielding just two hits and three walks while fanning five.

Radak was 3-for-4 and Mike Smith was 2-for-4 to lead the hitting attack for Lewis (9-39, 7-27). The Flyers scored in the fifth when Brian Clancy led off with a single, went to second on a passed ball and scored on Smith's two-out single.

The Flyers travel to Indianapolis for a GLVC doubleheader on Wednesday, then conclude the season at home Saturday and Sunday with GLVC doubleheaders against Quincy.
