EVANSVILLE, Ind.--A regular-season-ending doubleheader split with Southern Indiana leaves the Lewis University softball team with the No. 4 seed in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament May 6-8.
Lewis (27-20, 12-8 GLVC) won the opener 4-1, but lost the nightcap 6-3.
Junior Robin Martz went 4 for 4, stole two bases and scored a pair of runs to lead the Flyers to their game 1 win. Her four hits raised her season total to 78, just four shy of the single-season record she set last season. With 204 career hits, she needs eight more to pass Helen Kelliher and become Lewis' all-time leader.
In game 1, Martz led off with a single and stole second base in both the first and third innings. Both times she was brought home on an RBI base hit by junior Amy Yusko. Yusko delivered a single to left in the first inning and a double to right center in the third.
Mallory Paine added a run in the fourth inning to give Lewis a 3-0 lead. Paine led off with a single and eventually scored on a two-out RBI single from Kalynn Russell.
USI (27-18, 10-8 GLVC) scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Lewis answered in the top of the sixth with a solo home run by Shannon Roney.
Roney (11-7), who helped her own cause with the home run, pitched seven innings striking out two. She scattered four hits and allowed just two base runners to advance past first base.
Game 2 saw Kristen Porzel (4-8) take the hard-luck loss. Lewis committed five errors, left nine runners on base and did not allow an earned run. Porzel worked four innings giving up five unearned runs on five hits.
Offensively in the second game, Yusko, Christina Willis and Amy Roberts had two hits apiece.
The doubleheader with the Screaming Eagles served as a preview of the GLVC Tournament as the two teams will meet in the tournament first round Friday, May 6.
