ROMEOVILLE -
Jon Guzzo (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards)'s two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday sparked the Lewis University baseball team to a 6-4 win over Quincy in game two of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.
Quincy won the seven-inning opener 7-4.
Trailing 4-3 heading into the eighth, the Flyers (11-43, 9-31) used a leadoff single by Brandon Niewinski, a sacrifice by Kevin Tyrrell and a two-out single by Jim Gabriel to put runners at first and third. Guzzo then laced a base hit that fell in front of the charging Quincy center fielder and took a bad hop over his head, scoring both runners and allowing Guzzo to reach third.
After pinch hitter Phil Marchinski was intentionally walked, John Benisek (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian)'s single scored Guzzo with an insurance run. That was more than enough for Lewis hurler David Scheibe (3-3), who concluded an impressive 3 2/3-inning relief stint by retiring the side in order in the Quincy ninth.
Scheibe allowed four hits, did not walk a batter and fanned four in relief of starter Tim Harmatys, who yielded four runs, eight hits and one walk and struck out two in 5 1/3 innings.
Lewis plated two runs in the first. Mike Smith (Lemont, Ill./Lemont)'s leadoff double and Brandon Niewinski (Morris, Ill./Morris)'s bunt single and stolen base put runners at second and third. Tyrrell followed with a bunt single that scored Smith and moved Niewinski to third, and Niewinski later scored when Tyrrell was caught stealing.
The Flyers added an unearned run in the second. Guzzo led off by reaching on an error and advanced to third on Dave Tolchin (Lockport, Ill./Romeoville)'s walk and Benisek's sacrifice. After Sam Sacco walked to load the bases, Guzzo scored when Smith was hit by a pitch.
Quincy (30-24, 22-16) tallied a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to set the stage for the eighth-inning Lewis heroics.
An unearned run gave Lewis a first-inning lead in the opener. Smith was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on Victor Naut (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick)'s sacrifice fly.
That was all Lewis would get until the seventh inning but, trailing 7-1, the Flyers made it interesting in the final frame.
Walks to Andy Radak and Gabriel were followed by Tolchin's RBI single. Guzzo's single loaded the bases and was followed by Smith's RBI single and Niewinski's walk, but with the tying runs on base, Quincy starter Ervin Bridgewater (5-1) finally closed the door on the rally.
