Aug. 27, 2005

Box Score

ROMEOVILLE - The 2005 soccer season is very young, and so were most of the goal-scorers Saturday in Lewis University's 4-1 season-opening victory over non-conference opponent Northwood.

True freshmen Craig McIntosh, Jorge De Jesus and Cory Mastey joined junior Cathal Brady in finding the back of the net against the visiting Timberwolves (0-2). Senior TIto Lara collected two assists and redshirt freshman John Solberg added another.

The Flyers, tied for 17th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II national poll, got on the board with McIntosh's unassisted goal at 16:40 and led 1-0 at intermission.

De Jesus, with a Lara assist, scored what proved to be the game-winner at 49:21, and Mastey (Solberg) made it 3-0 Lewis at 60:09. Following Nathan Yopp's goal (Sergio Uccello) at 60:44 that broke the ice for Northwood, Brady got a helper from Lara and scored the final tally at 67:01.

Sophomore Dan Breen (two saves) and freshman Anthony Szymel (three saves) saw action in goal for the Flyers, whose 19-11 advantage in shots included a dominating 10-5 edge in the second half.

Lewis travels to Erie, Pa., next Friday for a non-conference battle against Gannon.
