Final Stats

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.--DEE-fense. DEE-fense. For the second straight game, a Lewis defender tallied the game-winning goal for the women's soccer team.

Facing cross-town rival, St. Francis, Lewis overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to pull past the Saint and record a 2-1 victory.

Despite applying dominating pressure, Lewis (2-1) found itself trailing for most of the game. St. Francis (0-1) got on the board first with a goal from Gaby Esparza at 4:31. Jessica Sabo began the scoring run with a pass to Lupe Proa inside the goal area. Proa then dribbled to within 10 yards before feeding Esparza, who tapped the ball past Lewis goalkeeper Lindsay Frederick.

The early goal would be Lewis' only mistake. The Flyers outshot USF 40-5, including 22-1 in the second half.

After trailing for more than 70 minutes, Lewis finally broke through with a goal at 73:24. Freshman Courtney Kettel dribbled in from the right endline before veering back towards the goal. Kettel's run left junior Jenna Volpi wide open as Volpi crashed from the left. Kettel passed off and Volpi chipped in her second goal of the season.

With 4:01 to play, freshman defender Elaine Felten provided the game-winning heroics as she curled a shot over USF's Carrie Rojek's head. Senior Loren Pellizzari assisted on the goal.

Despite the numerable shots faced, Rojek recorded only eight saves since Lewis put just 10 shots on goal. Meanwhile, Frederick finished with two saves.

Lewis will make its first road trip of the season this weekend. The Flyers travel to West Virginia to face Wheeling Jesuit (Saturday, Sept. 3) and West Virginia Wesleyan (Sunday, Sept. 4).
