Final Stats

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.--For the second time this season, the Lewis University women's soccer team played giant killer as it topped Missouri-St. Louis 1-0.

The Flyers' Jenna Volpi scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season on a 12-yard strike at 51:22. Freshman Sarah Ybarra began the eventual goal with a long pass down the right sideline to senior Loren Pellizzari. Pellizzari then fed Volpi, who launched a hard shot over the goalkeeper's head.

The assists were Pellizzari's second and Ybarra's team-leading fifth of the year. In addition, Ybarra has recorded an assist in three straight games.

The victory improves Lewis' overall record to 5-7-1 and 2-3-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. With seven games remaining, the Flyers matched their overall and conference win totals from all of last season. This is the third straight year Lewis has matched or bettered its win total from the previous season.

UMSL (8-3, 5-2 GLVC) came into the game tied for second in the conference, ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region and receiving votes in the NSCAA DII National Poll.

With the Flyers playing the first half into a strong headwind, the Riverwomen controlled play and did not allow a Lewis shot. Offensively, UMSL posted 17 shots in the first half, including six on goal. Christine Keim tallied the team's best chance of the half when she fired a shot that hit the cross bar with a minute and a half remaining in the period.

Playing downwind, Lewis quickly garnered its first scoring chance of the game. Pellizzari headed a ball that was saved by UMSL goalkeeper Mary Behrman just two minutes into the second half.

UMSL finished the game with a 27-3 advantage in shots, but just a 7-2 margin in shots on goal.

Lewis goalkeeper Lindsay Frederick earned her second career shutout while posting seven saves.

Lewis returns to action Sunday when it hosts Missouri-Rolla (3-7, 1-6 GLVC) at noon.
