ROMEOVILLE -
To say that the Lewis University men's soccer team snapped out of its scoring slump in Friday's Great Lakes Valley Conference game against Missouri-St. Louis might be the understatement of the year.
The Flyers scored a pair of late first-half goals in a span of less than two minutes, then exploded for five second-half tallies in less than 14 minutes in a 7-0 shellacking of the visiting Rivermen, who came to town tied for 10th in the most recent NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region rankings.
Lewis halted a four-game losing skid and evened its records at 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the GLVC, while UMSL fell to 3-3-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the league.
Nine Flyers got into the scoring column with a goal, an assist or both. TIto Lara netted his first two goals of the year, Scott Hall, Cathal Brady and Jorge De Jesus each had a goal and an assist, and Gavin Grogan registered two assists to lead the way.
Hall (Grogan assist) scored the only goal Lewis would need at 33:52 and assisted on Lara's first marker just 1:39 later at the 35:31 mark.
The Flyers wasted no time adding to their lead after intermission. Craig McIntosh was pulled down near the goal to earn a penalty kick that Brady tucked away at 47:40 to make it 3-0. That was followed by goals from Matt Field (Brady) at 51:38, De Jesus (John Solberg) at 58:54, Lara (Neil Van Huis, De Jesus) at 59:27 and Anthony Marsico (Grogan) at 61:26.
The Flyer defense also did its part, as UMSL did not record a shot on goal. The Rivermen had 11 total shots but just four in the second half as Lewis took command.
The Flyers host Missouri-Rolla, one of three new GLVC members, Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
