Jan. 21, 2006

Box Score

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Mary Moskal matched her season high with 25 points, shooting a perfect 11-of-11 from the floor, as the Flyers disposed of Bellarmine, 72-57 Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Knights Hall.

The Flyers improved to 11-6 (7-2 GLVC), while Bellarmine dropped to 9-8 (5-4 GLVC) for the season.

Moskal's spotless shooting from the field was the best by any GLVC player this season, topping Wisconsin-Parkside's Denise Mannella, who went 8-of-8 from the floor in a non-conference tilt against Mount Mary earlier this season. Moskal also tied her career-best effort, set against Ferris State on Nov. 15, 2003. In that game, the first of her collegiate career, Moskal went 11-of-11 from the floor and totaled 24 points.

Along with Moskal's impressive performance, which included 2-for-2 from 3-point range, two other Flyers scored in double figures. Darcee Schmidt posted 19 points and Shante Glenn added 14. Schmidt also had a team-high eight rebounds, while Glenn dished out a team-best seven assists.

The Knights scored the first basket of the game, but it was their only lead of the game. Lewis used a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to take the lead, getting seven points from Moskal during that span.

A 3-pointer and a layup by the Knights, cut the Flyers' lead to 2 points with 16:18 to go in the first half, but then Lewis took control and pushed their lead to as many as 23 points before settling for a 17-point advantage by halftime.

The Knights came out strong in the second half, holding the Flyers to just five points over the first 8:36 while scoring 18 during that stretch and cutting Lewis' lead to six points. Bellarmine's rally stalled there, however, and the Flyers ran their lead back to double digits and held that margin for the rest of the game.

Dana Beaven paced the Knights with 14 points, and Angela Smith chipped in with nine.

The Flyers shot 51.9 percent from the field, while limiting the Knights to 36.2 percent. Lewis made 11-of-17 free throws and pulled down 36 rebounds, while Bellarmine hit 9-of-13 from the foul line and grabbed 34 boards.

The Flyers host SIU Edwardsville on Thursday at 5:30 pm.
