Schmidt Powers Lewis Past Missouri-Rolla, 65-60

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Darcee Schmidt (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem)'s lay-up with 1:38 to play in regulation proved to be the game-winner for the Flyers (8-5, 5-1 GLVC) in a 65-60 win over Missouri-Rolla (10-2, 4-1 GLVC) Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena.

The win was the Flyers' third in a row, matching their longest winning streak of the season. Lewis snapped the Lady Miners' nine-game streak of holding opponents under 60 points and remained in control of first place in the East Division.

Schmidt shot 7-of-14 from the field (1-of-3 from 3-point range) and made 11-of-11 free throws to total 26 points, a game-high and season-high for a Flyer. Shante Glenn added 11 points with four assists, and Mary Moskal had a game-high 10 rebounds to go with her seven points.

The Flyers got off to a quick start, taking a 17-6 lead (their biggest of the game) at the 13:31 mark of the first half. The Lady Miners rallied for a 15-4 run, capped by Jaime Forsberg 3-pointer with 8:39 to go, to tie the game 21-21. Lewis held the edge for the next few minutes, going up by as many as four points, but the Lady Miners hit two jumpers in the final minute to earn a 30-30 tie at the intermission.

Lewis came out firing in the first five minutes of the second half and built a nine-point lead. Again the Lady Miners rallied to force a 52-52 tie with 8:17 to play in the game. For the next six minutes, the teams traded the lead seven times until Schmidt's lay-up put Lewis up for good.

Jaime Forsberg and Nicole Dierking led the Lady Miners with 16 and 11 points, respectively.

The Flyers made 19-of-21 from the line while holding the Lady Miners to 8-of-13 from the stripe. Lewis held the edge on the glass 38-31, including a 19-9 advantage in offensive rebounds.

The Flyers look to make it four straight wins when they host St. Xavier in a non-conference matchup on Thursday night.
