KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Following a 1-1 tie with host Rockhurst in a Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship quarterfinal game Sunday, the Lewis University men's soccer team won a 3-1 penalty-kick shootout decision to earn a trip to the tournament semifinals.

The fifth-seeded Flyers (12-5-1) will face top-seeded Southern Illinois Edwardsville (12-3-3), a 3-1 quarterfinal winner over Missouri-St. Louis, Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Edwardsville. No. 2 Northern Kentucky and No. 3 Wisconsin-Parkside meet in the first semifinal at 5. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday at 1.

Cory Mastey, Kipp Cartwright and Joey De Francesco converted shootout kicks for Lewis, which avenged a 2-0 regular-season loss to Rockhurst. The fourth-seeded Hawks (9-5-4), ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region poll, likely saw their season end.

Rockhurst led 1-0 after Steve Valenta (Adam Johnson assist) scored his third goal of the season from close range at 38:01. Lewis pulled even at 48:45 on a penalty kick by Mastey, his team-leading 12th goal of the season.

Goalkeeper Brian Byrne made three saves for the Flyers, who gained slight edges in total shots (9-8) and corner kicks (2-1).

Lewis defeated SIU Edwardsville 1-0 in Romeoville in the teams' regular-season meeting Sept. 17, breaking SIUE's 38-game GLVC regular-season unbeaten streak. The Cougars are ranked No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region and No. 7 nationally.

Northern Kentucky is ranked No. 2 in the Great Lakes and No. 15 nationally, while Wisconsin-Parkside is No. 3 in the Great Lakes and No. 19 in the nation. NKU won the regular-season match 1-0.
