HOUGHTON, Mich. -
Darcee Schmidt led Lewis with 18 points and was one of four Flyers to score in double figures as the Flyers defeated Lake Superior State 72-62, Friday afternoon in the opening game of the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge at the SDC Gymnasium on the campus of Michigan Tech.
In the season opener for both schools, it was the Flyers who came out in midseason form. Lewis delivered a dominating performance by shooting 46.6 percent from the field, while limiting the Lakers to a 30.4 percent effort.
A pair of free throws for the game's first two points and a 3-pointer at 13:46 of the first half provided the Lakers with their only two leads of the game. Lewis led by eight at the half and increased the margin to as many as 21 by 13:47 of the second half before settling for the 10-point win.
Along with Schmidt, Kelly Dianis (15), Jenna Mooberry (12) and Mary Moskal (10) were the other Flyers to reach double digits in points. Dianis also led the Flyers in rebounds (9) and steals (5). Brittney Diener led Lewis with five assists.
For the Lakers, Mandi Johnson scored a game-high 22 with 10 boards, while Jaclyn Armstrong scored 15 and hauled in 15 rebounds. However, the double-double efforts were not enough to overcome the 22.9 percent shooting by the rest of the team.
Lewis faces Michigan Tech on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
