ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Stephan Bolt (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North)'s buzzer-beating layup gave the Lewis University men's basketball team a 75-73 non-conference win over Trinity Christian Tuesday night.
Bolt, who scored a game-high and career-high 27 points on 12-of-18 shooting, took a pass from a driving Matthew Marino and released the ball just before the horn sounded.
Seconds earlier, Trinity Christian's Nick Rykse nailed a long 3-pointer that knotted the game at 73. The trey punctuated an 18-7 Trolls run.
The Flyers (2-1), who led 41-34 at halftime, appeared as though they would cruise after scoring the first 11 points of the second half to build a 52-34 cushion. But Trinity Christian (2-4) fought back behind Ross Stuursma and Ebiowei Porbeni, who scored 10 points apiece in the second half.
Jonathan Huizinga's 3-pointer with 1:10 to play cut the Lewis lead to 71-70. After the Flyers missed a free throw, Bolt blocked another Huizinga 3-point try, but the Trolls retained possession when Lewis knocked the ball out of bounds on the rebound.
With the shot clock about to expire, Huizinga tried another jumper that missed, and Dustin Warfield gathered the rebound for Lewis. Rykse fouled Marino, who made two free throws sandwiched around a timeout to set up the last two dramatic shots.
A 12-2 spurt gave Trinity Christian a 21-13 advantage with 10:43 left in the first half, but Lewis outscored the visitors 28-13 the rest of the way to take a 41-34 lead to the locker room.
Bolt also led the Flyers with seven rebounds and added three blocked shots and three steals. Dagans was 8-of-12 from the floor and scored 18 points, one shy of tying his career best, and collected a career-high and game-high five steals.
Brandon Alexander contributed 10 points and six rebounds (five offensive), while Jason Genova chipped in six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Marino had a game-high five assists and Warfield registered five rebounds.
Rykse was 4-of-5 from 3-point range and led the Trolls with 18 points. Stuursma finished with 15 points, while Porbeni netted 12 points and led all players with nine rebounds. Ty DeWitte grabbed seven boards for Trinity Christian.
